I can't believe how much the principles of logo design get lost in the business world these days. The company I work for is releasing a new product that is in need of a new logo. So the graphic design department held an internal contest amongst themselves. If you're a true artist, you wouldn't believe the crap they produced. Most looked more like graphical compositions laid out to fit within the dimensions given. Some of them even used photos! Did these people ever create a logo before?
A good logo should be usable at various sizes. The traditional practice is 1" for business cards and stationery. That's why photos and intricate elements shouldn't be used. Logos should work in one color because they're often used on B&W media. The one color rule also allows the logo to be beveled or embossed easily. Closed forms also tend to be appealing. This means the logo should form some kind of simple shape and a conceptual shape. It shouldn't have several random objects sticking out of it.
