If there's a subway station where you have to walk upstairs to get to another line, the fastest method is to take the last set of stairs rather than the first one you see. The tendency of most passengers is the immediate. The moment they exit, everyone rushes to the stairs, even if they have to backtrack a little. This clogs the path and slows everyone down. If you walk in the direction of your destination, but not up the stairs yet, you'll avoid the clogging and will be moving the entire time. By the time you make it to the last set of stairs, it'll be all clear. So if you walk up late, you'll spend less total time and will be at your destination earlier.
