US Open Day 1

Labor Day is near, the back-to-school sales are in full swing and the weather is supposed to be cooler. These are all normal signs of the start of the US Open, but on Day one, that last item didn't follow through as the players went through a grueling, humid 90 degree day.

The heat didn't seem to bother Roddick and Federer as they finished up in straight sets. Federer's opponent, Brian Dabul threw everything he had at the champ and played a pretty good game, but Federer was just much better. When he hits a behind the back, through the legs winner, there's no way he's going to lose! Some of the other men didn't have the luxury of a short match. Hewitt lost after 5. Soderling won his marathon. Monfils also won a marthon on a controversial call.

Not many surprises on the women's side. Oudin, Venus, Clijsters, Hantuchova, Ivanovic, Dementieva and Bartoli all won in straights. The most exciting mat6ch was Jie Zheng's win against Timea Bacsinsky... a close 7-6, 7-6 win.

Vasquez in Relief

The Yankees looked like they were going to get blown out early in last night's game as Mosely gave the A's a good head start in the first inning with 3 runs. It could've been a lot worse as he loaded the bases twice and just had no control of the strike zone. IT was a good thing the offense was awake though as the bombers quickly tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning. Mosely continued to give up hits and runs and was eventually taken out of the game early. In relief, they brought in Vasquez, who was effective with his last appearance from the pen. If you look at Vasquez's overall year, he's not that bad. There was just the slow start and the slump just before the 2 relief appearances. Many of his losses were low scoring games. From interviews, I sense that the effort is there. So I would definitely put him in the rotation over AJ Burnett. Even if he doesn't start, he provides a solid middle reliever who can put in more than a few innings is a starter gets into trouble.

Subway Tales: Early Morning Soap

I was sitting at one end of the car, at my normal seat, along with Pinky & Z. It was just an ordinary day and seemingly normal ride... until a couple got on at the 3rd stop in. I didn't see them at first, but just heard a woman speaking very loudly. I wasn't paying attention to the words yet because this is still relatively normal. At first, I thought it was just someone on a cellphone because the man wasn't saying anything. Then I looked across the train and saw that she was seated and talking to a guy standing in front of her. She was angry at something. Still not paying attention to what they were saying, I kind of figured she was complaining and he was just listening, because he was still either silent or speaking in a low voice. The man was obviously bothered by the woman attracting so much attention.

I didn't realize they were married until a man sitting next to the woman got up to give his seat to the standing man. The guy that was sitting was getting disturbed as the conversation between the couple got heated. As soon as the man went to sit down, the woman got up from her seat and said, "PLEASE... RICARDO!! [translated from Spanish]. From that line and large motion to stand up, Spanish soap operas just kicked off 4 hours earlier than scheduled! Rosa, still speaking loudly and mostly saying stuff like, "PLEASE, RICARDO... TELL ME THE TRUTH..." walked to one end of the train. The quiet Ricardo followed. They stayed at that end for about 2 stops, then walked across the entire car to the opposite end, giving all passengers a taste of the drama! Rosa went on to say "YOU'RE THE FATHER OF MY CHILDREN" and more "PLEASE... PLEASE."

Finally a Series

The Yankees finally won a series over the weekend. It seems like it's been forever and surprisingly, they're still hovering on a 1st place tie. The 3-game set against the White Sox got off to a slow start on Friday as the bad AJ Burnett showed up, only lasting 3 innings. Mitre in relief wasn't that bad, but a couple of wild pitches let the rest of AJ's earned runs (8 total) come in. Yankees lost 9-4 and never had a chance. Ghirardi is going to be in a tough spot when putting together then post-season roster. Which pitchers make the cut? Last year, an OK AJ turned out to be helpful in the playoffs. What will a terrible AJ bring in October? Will Joe take the gamble?

To bounce back on Saturday, the Yankees really needed a blowout win. The offense was there as Swisher, Nunez (1st career) and Thames (twice) went deep. Nunez played his best game so far with 4 RBIs and a couple of spectacular defensive plays. The bad thing about this game was CC was not dominant, giving up 5 runs. The Yankees offense gave him a lot of cushion, but the bullpen let Chicago back into it as Joba and Robertson gave up 2 a piece. Yankees ended up winning 12-9... a lot closer than it should have been. They had to bring in Rivera to close it out.

Sunday's game was a pitcher's duel and Ivan Nova's 2nd outing. He's been doing OK so far. In this game, he had 1 earned run in 5.2 innings. The bullpen pitched into and out of trouble a few times and Rivera had to close it out again. The Yankees won 2-1. Thames had the game tying RBI and Gardner knocked in the game winner early in the game. With a short, but OK outing by Nova, it really makes the post-season decision harder. Do you go with a less experienced starter over a struggling veteran?

As of now, I would go with this rotation... CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes, Javier Vasquez and Joba Chamberlain. There's no need to explain CC & Andy. FFor the 3rd and 4th spots, Hughes and Vasquez have been good and bad, so I can gamble with them in the rotation. AJ has been mostly bad this year, so he's out. So I had to pull Joba out to a starting position. He did it last year and he was OK. He's been shaky in the bullpen this year and Woods has been more consistent. Either way, the Yankees will be weaker in the pitching category than many other teams.

Germ Source

With millions of people traveling on the subway, pretty much any part of the train you touch is filled with germs. One major source is the office restroom. I noticed that people are far less sanitary at the end of the day. Almost everyone takes a pit stop just before they leave, since NYers average a 45 min commute. The problem is almost everyone who goes doesn't wash their hands after doing their business. I guess they figured that it's the end of the day and they won't be shaking hands with anyone. So the evening rush is probably significantly more infectious than the morning commute. So keep this in mind as you ride home or meet friends after work. Did they wash their hands? Chances are... NO!

Blues in Canada

The Yankees dropped another important series as they went on the road to Toronto at the start of the week. Fall is nearing quickly and the team is dealing with injuries to key players. Pettitte's recovery is slower than I had hoped and A-Rod is out with a strained calf.

Monday's loss was a pitcher's duel that featured the Yankees rookie, Nova. The kid showed great stuff as he replaced Vasquez in the rotation this time around and attempted to fill gaps in a roster that needs to figure itself out soon. Nova pitched 5.1 innings, gave up 6 hits and 2 runs... that's not bad for a first start and it was well enough to win. Robertson gave up an 8th inning homer as the Yankees lost by just 1.

The offense that fell asleep Monday scored 11 runs to win 11-5 on Tuesday. They did it with 5 homers... Tex, Thames, Posada, Granderson and Jeter. The pitching wasn't particularly good as Mosley and Gaudin combined for 5 earned runs. The only bright spot was Woods, who has been great since the acquisition.

The series ended with a 6-3 loss last night. Hughes, as he usually does towards the end of the season lost the game, giving up 5 runs. He was knocked out in the middle of the 4th. Vasquez came in and at least gave the Yankees a chance to win. He pitched 4 innings and gave up 1 run, the the offense couldn't score.

Jet Jagua Song

I was early again and saw Jet Jagua again. Whenever I see him, I'm reminded of that funny end credit song in Godzilla vs. Megalon. So I actually found the Mystery Science Theater version on YouTube tonight. They translated it too. Here it is...

Jet Jaga... Jet Jaga... something something Japanese... Jet Jaga!

Verizon vs. Time Warner

No one around has perfect cable service. I've heard complaints from both Verizon FiOS and Time Warner... more from Verizon though. They seem to have more connectivity problems. They have a rough installation process. I was at one of my friend's apartments and they had a huge, pizza box size panel installed for FiOS. I have TW myself and don't have any major problems. Occasionally, the modem needs to be reset, but no long term outages. The thing that gets me though is Verizon has great phone service. While the iPhone has a lot of users, many Verizon customers won't make the switch to AT&T for the hardware. How could a company with such great phone service have such bad Internet service?

Subway Tales: Jet Jagua

In a cast full of weird looking monsters, Jet Jagua is probably the weirdest of all in the world of Godzilla. He's a man made orange and silver robot that can change size from a 6ft humanoid to a 400ft monster. He helps Godzilla fight off the alien monsters Megalon and Gigan in Godzilla vs. Megalon.

I haven't heard or seen anything about Jet Jagua until the blast from the past started riding the same train car as me. This guy walks like a robot and wears a long and large backpack that resembles a jet pack. He stands with his arms pointed diagonally down and straight, like he's going to blast off. His head shape is even similar to the original Jet Jagua, with a pointed chin and sharp back of the head. Since it's been over 30 years since the original, technology probably allowed this new one to look and act a little more humanlike... a little!

Weekend Sport Wrap Up

Yankees
It seems like forever since the Yankees won a series as they went through a pretty bad stretch in the first half of August. They started out Friday with a bad 6-0 loss though. It was another case of Jekyll and Hyde by AJ Burnett. The bad AJ showed up and lost to one of the worst teams in the AL. He doesn't have much time to shape up. The pitching is in pretty bad shape at this point, with CC being the only consistent one. Pettitte is still injured, but hopefully he'll be 100% in September. Vasquez is like AJ... don't know which one will show up... good or bad. Hughes is on an innings limit and if he's anything like last year, he'll start to get worse in the Fall. Vasquez actually got off to a bad start in Game 2, but the Yankees offense ignited and the bullpen was solid. They turned a 4-0 deficit into a 9-5 win. Today, CC had another rain delay game, but was solid in his perfect 10-0 win as the offense kept their fire from yesterday.

Tennis
I haven't watched anything since Wimbledon, but caught the Cincinnati Final this morning as Federer won the final US Open warmup tournament. It looked like it was going to be Mardy Fish's day as he played to the champion's level. Fish took the first set 7-6 (5) and took the 2nd to a tiebreak as well. Federer won the second and came back in the 3rd as Fish looked fatigued. Federer heads into the US Open with a win, but didn't cruise.

Clemens
The Clemens steroid story is back and this time it looks like he's really in trouble. Somehow, the guy still believes he's innocent. I think the only thing that can get him out of the perjury charge is insanity! He could actually be delusional. He's so self-confident that he may truly believe that he didn't take steroids and HGH, even though there was evidence on McNamee's needles.

Order Forms

Can you remember the last time you filled out an order form? I'm not talking about and online one, but the paper ones. I don't think I have since I was a kid! Today, we got a request from one of our departments about some site updates that involved online forms. That's pretty normal, but there was an old link that opened up a PDF so users could print out a form... fill it out and buy our stuff that way. I went to the requesting department and asked them for an updated PDF and also suggested we could just take down that option. They went for the udpated PDF! I might think it's rare for people to order via paper form, but look at it this way... a user is on the internet and is surfing our website. Why would he/she want to switch gears and order using paper and snail mail? It's so much more work. He/she would have to first print out the think, fill it out with neat handwriting (or worse... type onto the form!) and then mail it out. So much more can go wrong. It can get lost in the mail. The wrong postage could get affixed. Bad handwriting can lead to a mistake in the shipment. And most important... everything takes longer. It's not instant like an online fulfillment. But apparently, there are users who do it like this!

Clockwork Apple: Pinky & the Z-Man

There are 2 more regulars in the same train car as me that tell me I'm on time:

Pinky
Pinky lives up to his name as he always wears pink. When I first noticed him, I thought that maybe it was a one day thing... a casual Friday or a day off. But every day, he has at least one piece of clothing that's pink. Most of the time, it's a shirt and sneakers, but he has also worn pink pants before. He's not a high school or college kid either... late 20's or early 30's. So I just wonder what kind of office he works in as he follows the same fixed schedule each day.

Mr. Z
Mr. Z hardly wants to be one of the sheep. Unlike all of the iPod owners on the train, Mr. Z is proud of his first generation Zune. Not only was he the guinea pig with the first model, but he also bought the brown one... yup, he's the one user in the world that probably bought that model and color. But one thing's for sure... if he's still using it today... August of 2010, then it means it's a more durable device than the iPod!

2010-08-17

K-Rod

Things got even better with the K-Rod story! Apparently, he injured himself while assaulting Carlos Pena, the father of his fiancee (probably former). He damaged his thumb and possibly needs surgery. It's highly likely that the Mets will try to kill his contract. That's not really why I'm writing this post though. It's just amazing how far a team will go to protect its players. Don't you think it's a done deal to release K-Rod and lock the criminal up? Although, the release is expected, all of the interviews with the organization have been fairly neutral. They don't want to say anything is definite, as if there's some slight, miracle chance that K-Rod is innocent. That's just how far we've elevated sports. These guys ARE above the law!

Weekend Sports Wrapup

Yankees
The Yankees aren't having a good August as they're dropping series after series. They've gone downhill since the trade deadline, although only Berkman is hurting the team. Over the weekend, they lost a 4-game series to the lowly Royals. The good news is the Red Sox and Rays have also been losing, so the standings aren't that much different.

US Basketball
As expected, the US dominated France in their exhibition play at MSG 86-55. Rudy Gay led with 19 points, followed by Billups' 17 and Durant's 14. France just doesn't have enough NBA power (Diaw and Pietrus). Though the US looked good, many of the announcers were saying Spain or Greece would probably win the upcoming tournament. The other countries have an edge in chemistry because they have consistent teams over the years, while the US keeps changing for each tournament.

Scottie Pippen Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Scottie Pippen on making the Hall of Fame this year. It was truly deserved as he is one of the best of all time. It was fitting that he entered with Michael Jordan at his side. They were the best one-two punch in NBA history.

UC35JC vs. Apple

I already posted that the Alienware M11X was one of the best laptops you could get for any purpose. Then, last month I posted that The Asus U35JC beats out the M11X a couple of months better. So naturally, it's already better than anything Apple makes. But I'm going to compare it to Apple's full line... Macbook, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air just because people love them so much.

The Macbook Pro is hands down, the most powerful in the Apple family, but you need to get the 15" or 17" to get one of the "i" processors. The most compact, 13" one just has a Core 2 Duo. So at 13", the UC35JC is about the same in power as the 15" Macbook Pro. Both carry the same maximum RAM capacity at 8 GB... already high for any laptop, but insane for a 13"! The price difference is about $900 if you max out the RAM on both.

A few people want something super portable and are willing to sacrifice a lot of power. These people go for the Macbook Air, which is the thinnest laptop in the market and weights just about 2 lbs. The Asus doesn't come close to 2 lbs (it's 3.75), but it's almost just as thin and beats out the Air in every category. The Air is a basic laptop that is half the weight of a normal one and twice the price. So the Asus makes more sense when you think about price and power. Air maxxes out at 2 GB RAM and only has a Core 2 Duo processor.

The lowest model in the family, the regular Macbook, doesn't come close in power. I'm only talking about it because if you max it out with 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD, it's already $1249 for half the machine that the U35JC is.

So there you have it... a laptop that's a little heavier than the Macbook Air, a little bit more expensive than the Macbook and as powerful as the 15" Macbook Pro!

Sword of Azrael: 201008

Slave Pit
K-Rod, Mets closer deserves to be locked up for assaulting his fiance's father in the Citi Field family room. He was arrested, but only given a 2-game suspension by the Mets. I always thought he was a thug and he just lived up to it. His fiancee is an idiot if she's still his fiancee. K-Rod got into an argument with possible future father-in-law, had him pinned up against the wall and repeatedly punched the 53 year old.

Death by Fire
This penalty goes to Elias Abuelazam x18 for the stabbings he committed in Michigan. He lured 18 people into thinking he was disabled in the highway when he stabbed them and ran. He seemed to target blacks. Although not all 18 victims were black, he may not have known that while luring people in on the highway. 5 of the 18 died, but he gets 18 for his attempted murders. The equivalent punishment would be to stab him 18 times, but not all at once. He has to get stabbed and then be nursed back to health 17 times. The final one would be the critical strike.

Excommunication
It shouldn't be Steven Slater who loses his job, but the unruly passenger who started the whole thing. The airline has rules and regulations regarding luggage and carry-ons. Everyone is bringing in the largest carry-on they possibly could, so it's first come first serve. If the overheads are filled, bags have to be checked in. This passenger would not let her bags get checked and they wouldn't fit in the overhead because she was late.

2010-08-12

T & Z

T-Mac
Tracy McGrady was not signed by the Bull. Instead, the central rival Pistons got him. It probably worked out better that way because the Pistons are in greater need of him. He'll have a bigger role on that team whereas the Bulls might end up benching him most of the time. Though McGrady initially would agree to a lesser role, I'm pretty sure frustration would kick in during the middle of the season and a trade demand would follow. The Pistons sucked last year because they lacked depth during injuries. So McGrady could potentially help them out a lot and be happier there.

Zeke
The Knicks were trying to bring back Isaiah Thomas as a consultant and fans were receptive to the idea. Are they nuts? He's responsible for some of the worst seasons in franchise history... and more importantly, with a team that looked great on paper. They did find that it was in violation of league rules because he's a coach of a college team in Florida. So even though fans wanted it, things ended up for the good of the organization! The Knicks are plagued by bad luck already, with good teams that should make the playoffs putting together some of the worst seasons in Knicks history. Thomas was part of that bad luck, so it'll increase the Knicks' success by passing on him.

2010-08-11

The Dream Exit

Ever have a crappy job and feel like letting it all out as you quit? Well, flight attendant Steven Slater lived up to that dream a couple of days ago. An unruly passenger was having an argument with another passenger. There wasn't enough overhead space for all the carry-ons... a normal thing these days. So it's first come first serve. Slater tried to breakup the argument, but instead, the crazy woman smacked him in the head with the overhead compartment and cursed him out. Slater one-upped her by cursing her out via the PA system. He then grabbed a couple of beers and made his exit through the emergency slide. He actually made it all the way to his home in Queens without problems, but was finally arrested there.

The above video is an animation of the incident created by the same guys that brought you the Tiger Woods crash.

Steven Slater became an overnight hero at least to NYers who can relate to office slavery and being fed up. Slater has Facebook groups, shirts and people raising funds for bail!

The Boos

Berkman is hitting less than .100 now, but the fans had another reason to boo him last night. During batting practice, he hit a line drive that took out A-Rod at the ankles as he was talking to reporter, Joe Buck. Of course it wasn't intentional, but it just adds to the bad luck for new veteran who hasn't contributed anything yet. What were the chances of a freak accident like that happening? Fortunately, the Yankees won behind a good performance by Cano and CC Sabathia. CC went a pretty good distance after a bad 2nd inning. He was efficient in his outs after that and went into the 8th inning. A loss last night would've totally been on Berkman... at least in Yankees fans point of view.

A-Rod's x-rays were negative and it has been confirmed that he'll play in tonight's game.

The New Guys

The Yankees finally won one yesterday... partly because there was minimal use of the new guys. Only Berkmann played. So far, in their 5-6 games with the Yankees, none of them has produced anything yet. I know it's early, but everyone was talking big about these guys. They said that Granderson could be in danger of losing his job to Kearns and Joba might lose the setup spot to Woods. As of now, Joba and Granderson have nothing to worry about! Granderson has been doing OK. While he's not a Matsui or Damon, he's been fairly consistent. Joba has had a couple good outings lately. Even if you count all of his appearances, there's nothing in Woods' stats that says he's going to overwhelmingly take Joba's setup spot. The guy is just a step up from Park. And Berkmann is already overused I think. He should not be a starter! When he first came aboard, they tried him in the #2 spot, moving Swisher to #6. That was quickly corrected and they were swapped. If Jeter gets on base, they need a guy who can knock in a run! I can see why they want Berkmann as a starter though. There's no one else really and you can't have a catcher DH all the time otherwise there could be substitution problems in the event of an injury or ejection. So they're banking on the veteran to shape up. Otherwise, they're better off having Curtis take the spot!

Off day today... and they'll need it. It's the Sox over the weekend!

600

It had to come sooner or later, but what better time for A-Rod to hit his 600th homer than on a rare weekday daytime game? If somehow the number of people tuned in via TV to watch affected him, then I'd say he was more relaxed, going deep into centerfield, to start the Yankees off to a 2-0 lead. It was a big relief since there was so much attention given to it. I think he handled the situation perfectly over the past week and a half. So I'm glad he finally got it.

The Yankees did lose the series because of their experimentation with the new guys in the first 2 games, but this was an important rubber game to bounce back in since it got the 600th homer out of the way. The Yankees won 5-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Hughes, who only gave up 4 hits and a run. This helps nudge his ERA a bit lower. He still needs to get it down quite a bit to match his W/L record. Jeter had 4 hits and 3 runs... a sign that he's heating up as Fall approaches. This is where the law of averages comes into play. Going into the game, Jeter was hitting .275. He's a career .300 hitter, so look for him to hit .350-.400 as the season winds down. He's gone through slumps before and still ended up with a season average of .300.

2010-08-02

Stung

The Yankees finally lost a series this weekend and it couldn't have been worse. The Rays took 2 out of 3 to close within one game of first place. The weekend began with a tough 2-3 loss on Friday. Phil Hughes actually looked good in that game. He made only one mistake... a 3-run homer to Matt Joyce, which cost them the game in the 6th inning. The Yankees offense could only scrap up 4 hits. Just about everyone struck out once. Saturday's 5-4 win behind Cano's 9th inning game winning RBI was a moment of hope. It guaranteed that they would come out of Florida and their road trip in first place. It was an exciting back and forth game between the 2 tops teams. It wasn't a particularly good outing by Vasquez, but OK. He was able to keep the damage to a minimum and the bullpen came through. After Vasquez left in the middle of the 6th, Logan, Robertson and Rivera shutdown the Rays for the rest of the game. Thankfully, they didn't insert Chan Ho Park! Sunday's game was a 3-0 shutout as James Shields picked up 11 strikeouts. The Yankees played all three of their new players... Berkman, Kearns and Woods. None of them were impressive and if anything, took time away from guys that had a chance of winning the game. Berkman was great in his peak, but he just looks like a retired out of shape player right now. I think the hope is he gets a spark from playing on the Yankees and revitalizes his career. Well... he'd better do it quickly!

On a side not, A-Rod is still stuck on 599 homers. He seemed to be pressing at some at bats, but for the most part is playing the game the right way. He's batting over 300 since 599, is getting RBI's, getting walked and working the count. If anyone's making things look bad, it's the fans. They're pressing more than anyone else. As Michael Kay said, it's perfectly normal for A-Rod to go homerless for this period of time.

Targus 16" Laptop Backpack @ RS for $19.99
This isn't as good a deal as last week, but still rare and still good. It's basically a 16" version of the Targus Groove, so it'll have the same level of padding and similar pockets. It was likely redesigned for the newer 16:9 laptops where we see a lot of 15.6" and 16" models. This is a good budget backpack as other comparable ones can be $60 or higher.

iPod Deals
- 32 GB iPod touch @ TG for $295 + $25 gift card

2 TB Seagate Ext. HDD @ ST for $139.99
Remember when 1 TB used to be $200? That was only about 2 years ago. And this one is an external too. It's the best $/GB this week.

MS Wireless Mouse 3500 @ TG for $18.88
This is a good basic wireless mouse with a nano receiver. I favor Logitech models most of the time, but MS is a close second. The only knock I have against them is they don't have a tilt wheel on many of their models. But otherwise, tracking and other functions are great. Staples also has this model on sale, but it's $19.99.
