What Happened to Summer?
After our week of hot weather, things have been pretty cool over the past week. And it's been consistently cool to the point where it actually feels like Autumn in August! Everything about today... temperature, humidity, wind... even the scent made it seem like Autumn. The only thing missing was the foliage. So I wonder if this is it... the end of Summer. Will it make a surprise comeback in September or even October? Or is it just plain shortened? The weather has been taking some strange terms over the past few years, but 2009 was certainly the weirdest. We had about 2 weeks of real Summer weather. One was early... either May or June. Then it was mild until the beginning of August. We had a week of super hot weather mixed in with powerful and random 15-min thunderstorms.
Weekend Sports Wrap Up
Yankees
Over the weekend, the Yankees avenged their last series loss to the White Sox by handing them a sweep. It was a good bounce back from the previous series loss to the Rangers as well. Friday's game was a 5-2 win behind a strong performance by CC Sabathia and a 3-run walkoff homerun in the 10th inning by Robinson Cano. Saturday's game could almost be written off as a loss because Mitre was scheduled to start. Instead, he showed up in great form and pitched 2-hit ball in 6.1 innings. The bullpen held things down as the Yankees took a 10-0 blowout win. Sunday debuted the new Joba rules... in rotation, but less innings... 3 to be exact. Joba was OK. He looked good at some points, but still gave up 2 runs in 3 innings. So at the end of the weekend, the Yankees are still 6 games ahead of the Red Sox since they also won their games.
Super 8
The winner of the 8-man tournament was a surprise... Cosmo Alexandre! This was the guy that got beat up in a one-sided fight against Yodsaenklai last month. He trained hard and showed up in shape. A little bit of luck was on his side as well. He defeated Dzhabar in the first fight, which was already a surprise. In the 2nd fight he defeated JWP, who fractured his leg in the first fight. Too bad JWP wasn't 100%. I don't think Cosmo would've lasted against him. And when was the last time JWP had to stop a fight? That's why I say luck had its hand in this tournament. Preacher actually won a match... 1st one since Contender Asia I think!

Sword of Azrael: 200908
Death by Fire: This goes to Joseph Pabon for killing the cleaning lady, Eridania Rodriguez on 7/7. Not only that... he pleaded not guilty even with DNA evidence against him.
Slave Pit: Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's doctor is being charged with homicide for overdosing Jackson on sleeping drugs. I don't think the intent was there, which is why I didn't place him under Death by Fire, but a doctor always needs to do his job responsibly... no off time... no excuses. Jackson may have pleaded and whined for the propofol, but it was Murray's duty as a doctor to refuse him. Jackson was already on Valium, Iorazepam and Midazolam.
Excommunication: Any cops who ignore women's complaints about subway flashers and masturbaters should be disciplined or lose their jobs. It's insensitive and a failure to protect women.

Outgunned
The Yankees finally lost a series, though it wasn't that far from a win. Tuesday's game was the heartbreaker. Joba looked bad out there, but it must be tough for him to play around so many rules set by the organization... counting pitches, innings, skipping starts. It's a little crazy. Statistics have been the craze over the past couple of years, but it gets ridiculous when you're counting pitches down to the end of a player's career! As Joe Torre says, "there's a heartbeat in there." The Yankees got off to a quick start, scoring 4 in the first, but then went into a drought. The Rangers had a 10-5 lead in the 7th and into the 9th. It looked like it was going to be another instant classic as the Yankees rallied for 4 runs, coming only short by 1. Given the way they've been playing, I was in disbelief that they lost by 1. A walkoff was almost bound to happen.
Game 2 was another ace performance by Andy Pettitte, going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs. The Yankees offense continued where it left off Tuesday night, scoring 9 runs lead by Posada's 3-run homer. Jorge & Matsui have been on a homerun streak for the past couple of weeks. Pettitte has given the Yankees a lot more than expected this year... just like last year's Mussina. Hopefully he doesn't retire yet.
Today's matinee was a 2-7 loss. It's too bad because AJ Burnett struck out 12 guys. One bad pitch cost him the game though... a 3-run homer to Ian Kinsler. The Yankees had the hits and runners to come back, but just weren't efficient today.
This weekend, it's NY vs Chicago. The Yankees will host the White Sox and the Mets are taking on the Cubs at Wrigley.

The Obvious
Something that really bothers me is when people at work state the obvious and do it often. It's OK to do it once in a while when reciting something for one's own personal review, but when it's in meetings or an email, it means the person isn't paying attention. Who does this? You guessed it... that PM again! This adds to the uselessness of his position. This is a time killer for him. Because he has nothing important to do, sending these messages keeps him on people's radars... "hey guys... I'm here. Remember me?" How does his boss see this? It's hard to say. If the guy up top is smart, he might be on to him. If he's not so bright or not really paying attention, he might thing the PM is doing a great job.
I personally don't play into that game. When the PM sends me an email stating a fact that I already confirmed or told him, I just ignore him. If I spend any time answering him, it's time going to waste.

Rivalry Weekend
The Yankees are still on a roll. I would've liked to see a series sweep, but 2/3 is fine against their Boston rivals. Friday's game was a terrible pitching performance on both sides. Giving up 11 runs, one wouldn't expect the Yankees to be winners, but their Murderer's Row offense put up 20! 7 runs alone were knocked in by Matsui, who had a career night. The team had 23 hits total and were very efficient... almost a run per hit! Like the Yankees of last year, they ran out of gas for Game 2. In an exact opposite game, the Sox won 14-1 as Burnett & Posada had issues. Sunday's game was the most exciting of the 3 as the 2 aces, Sabanthia & Burnett faced off. Jeter started things off on a first pitch leadoff homer. Matsui ended up with another 2-homer night. A-Rod hit one over the monster. Cano also knocked one out. At the end of the weekend, the Yankees had a 7.5 game lead in the East... solid!
Crosstown, the Mets lost 2/3 to their NL rival Phillies. I didn't watch those games, but the finale was in the new everywhere after a game ending, unassisted 9th inning triple play by the Phillies. The Mets had runners on 1st & 2nd and both were running. The batter hit a line drive to 2nd baseman, Eric Bruntlett who made the catch for out #1. He stepped on 2nd for out #2 and he tagged out the runner from 1st to end the game on a 4-4-4 triple play!

The picture in the circular looks like the Targus Groove, but it's listed as a 16" backpack, so maybe it's a larger version of it. When you buy this for $19.99, you have the option of adding a Gigaware 4 GB flash drive for $5 (otherwise $14.99).
Gigaware 4-Port USB Hub @ RS for $14.99

Beauty vs. Juiced Up Beast!
I'm a fan of Gina Carano, so I'm still bummed at the loss, but I can take a few positives from this. Gina fought well. If she puts in some more time with ground work, I think she can take the monster in a rematch. It was also nice to see her smile and hug Cyborg after the match. Gina is always at a disadvantage in the ring. She's extremely beautiful, so she has something to lose. Her opponents are all busted looking and don't really need to protect their heads! There were also some funny quotes across message boards and social network pages from Gina fans. Here are a few that made me laugh:
"Gina did better than i expected but it was not enough to beat, this so called woman, Cyborg"--Kid-Kong (K-1 Fans Forum)
"if cris cyborg beat gina, she must be in mens division"--BVRN (K-1 Fans Forum)
"You are still the best [female] fighter in all MMA"--Denny Appleman (Gina's Facebook Page)
"has someone check cyborg for a scrotum yet?"--Greg Williams (Gina's Facebook Page)
"That girl should get tested she has a steroid chin!! no woman looks like that without roids!"--Lisa Gaisser Kopf (Gina's Facebook Page)

Subway Tales: In or Out?
One of my pet peeves about entering and exiting the subway cars is passengers inside the train that wait until the last minute to exit. I make it a point to let passengers off first, unlike most New Yorkers on the platform. So I feel like the passengers are taking advantage of my politeness when they exit too slowly. Riders should be aware of where they're getting off and be prepared when it's coming up. The doors aren't open that long and people need to get off and then on. If you take your time getting off, then you're blocking people from getting on. This is a fast pace city. Keep up or ship out!

Wright Guy... Wrong Team
Over the weekend, David Wright was sent to the hospital with a concussion after getting beaned in the head by Giants Matt Cain. The Mets put him on the DL and started breaking news that he would be out for the season. From the organization's point of view, the season is down the toilet and they don't want to risk injury to their star 3rd baseman. But ask Wright and you'll get, "I'm sure that I'll be able to play again this year." He also said that it is an embarrassment to be on the DL. He has also talked to Matt Cain and there's no bad blood between them. What a class act! What's he doing on the Mets? This is the organization where a coach challenged a minor league player to a fight in the locker room... and organization where the manage accused a reporter publicly of lobbying for a staff position... and organization known for choking in September.Mets fans won't want to hear this, but it came straight from the man's mouth. David Wright models himself after Derek Jeter. He's an honest, good guy that gives 100% all the time. He's good with the media, stays out of trouble and is very humble. Like Jeter, he consistently downplays his success. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in an old blog post yet, but I made a prediction... before the end of his career, David Wright will play for the Yankees. When he gets older, the Mets will screw him over in some way and the Yankees have always showed a great respect for the games veterans. Look at how they treated Strawberry, Gooden, Leiter, Justice... the list goes on. All of those guys in their retirement are more involved with the Yankees organization than the Mets.

Weekend Sports Wrap Up
AL East Race
The Yankees dropped one game, but it was a good weekend overall. They took the series against the Mariners. It's a team that can beat anyone on any given day because they have one of the greatest players in the game, Ichiro. But the Yankees managed to take 3 of 4! The Red Sox have been anything but consistent since the break. While they still have a good record, the 4-game series sweep against the Yankees really hurt them as they're now 7.5 games back from 1st place. The Yankees need to get another sweep next weekend for 2 reasons. They need to get the season series closer than 8-4... and a series sweep would pretty much knock the Sox out of the race.
Rogers Cup
I haven't really paid that much attention to Tennis this year other than the Grand Slam events, but I did get a chance to catch Roddick vs. del Potro at the Rogers Cup. It almost reminded me of the match against Federer at Wimbledon because Federer started out good, then seemed to give in to a back-and-forth match. The dug himself a hole in the 2nd set, but almost came back... made it close. They were toe-to-toe at the end, but like in Wimbledon, Andy's opponent had a slight edge. He just looked fatigued after the first set. I think del Potro is a player he should beat in straight sets.
Strikeforce
The biggest fight in women's MMA took place Saturday night when Gina Carano (7-0) faced off with Kris Cyborg (7-1). It only lasted one round, but was a close match. Gina actually looked good in the beginning, but her loss can be attributed to lack of experience on the ground. There was one point early in the round where she had a full mount and then she gave it up because she preferred striking. If she kept that position, she could've secured the win. The end of the round was a bit controversial too. Cyborg had the upper hand at the end and the the ref ended the fight at the bell. I think Gina could've continued. But it's tough to say if she would've won... hard to beat a juiced up man! Anyway, a rematch would be interesting... also a Muay Thai match would be cool.

Best SS Ever!
The Yanks failed to get another sweep, but at least walked away with a series win. I guess they can't sweep everyone, but fans were starting to get spoiled, thinking they could win every game. Today's loss was 10-3, but I never thought there was no chance of a comeback. It's just they way the Yankees have been playing after the All-Star break... the best record in Yankees history so far.
Jeter hit another milestone today. Of his 3 hits today, the first tied Luis Aparicio for most hits by a SS in baseball history. His 2nd hit put him at the top of the mountain. I remember the point in Michael Jordan's career (early in his career) when he started to rack up records and surpass the game's legends. This is were Jeter is now and he's got a long way to go. Any record he breaks now will surely be out of reach at the end of his career.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
I actually watched this a while back, but didn't get a chance to review it until now. First off, it looked like my previous posts about the cast were based on rumors because some of those characters never appeared (eg. Grimlock, Blaster, Skylynx). Despite what many of my friends thought, I enjoyed the movie a lot. In a perfect world, there would be no human characters other than in the background, but the film was obviously appealing to the teen crowd with the ever beautiful Megax Fox. So there's the whole side story with her and Sam "Spike" Witwicky. But this film had a lot more robot action scenes than the original. There were a lot of characters and I couldn't even keep up, so I'm not going to attempt to list them all... yet! The special fx were still top notch as before. They probably used the same models as before for the characters in the first movie. They all still looked good and consistent. Optimus was awesome in this one. He had a an excellent fight sequence in the middle of the film, taking on and beating multiple Decepticons. I'm glad they made Bumblebee talk through the radio again. It adds a lot more to his character that way. Of the new characters, I thought Sideswipe (Corvette Concept) and Jetfire (SR-71 Blackbird) had great detail. Wheelie (RC Truck) was a bad guy, but had a lot of cute exchanges with Mikayla for comic relief.
I wish they gave more screen time to Soundwave (satellite), who just stayed in orbit the whole time. As a whole, they didn't concentrate too much on the Decepticons. They just looked like generic robots because they didn't have earth vehicle forms... which is the whole point of success of this franchise. The alternate forms are supposed to be clever and original. Ravage (Rampage?) was just an alien wildcat with no alternate form. In the end, the Decepticons had a whole army, but no vehicle forms.
Overall, I thought this one was better than the first. For the most part, the story was consistent. They brought back all of the right characters. Michael Bay held nothing back as far as fx, explosions and sound.

Quality vs. Quantity
One of the project managers I work with seems to think that quantity comes before quality. He's obviously making a pitch on the importance of his position. There are many occasions when the whole team is busy with projects... the whole team except him. So he'll try to find something to do and bug one of the developers about it. Since he's not technically knowledgeable, every question he asks requires a long answer or meeting even. He always makes things seem bigger than they really are. Sometimes when no one answers his emails, he'll go ahead and answer them himself. I've seen him reply himself 4x in a row, basically giving a play-by-play of what he's doing... again making the process longer than it should be. I don't get it. A project manager in theory is suppose to reduce time and make the team more efficient. Being a bottle neck is the exact opposite... that's what the sales team is for! Hopefully this guy doesn't last too long here.

More Pie Anyone?
Who wants pie today? Robinson Cano got the honors in today's walk-off matinee with an 11th inning base hit to score A-Rod from 2nd. The team's confidence must really be spiking now. They have the swagger of the championship teams. They feel they can win games in the 8th and 9th innings. To recap the series, the Yankees dropped Game 1 behind the poor pitching of Mitre. Every time the Yankees had an exciting inning of hits and runs, Mitre gave it right back. He also made a costly throwing error after and amazing grab up the line as he tossed it wide to Cano. That was the play that was said to have cost the game. Im not sure why Ghirardi gives this guy so many chances. Mitre has not shown anything positive since being added to the rotation. His spot in the rotation is important because Joba is quickly approaching the pitch count limit the organization has him on. Towards the end of the season, he's going to be skipping his turn as they conserve him for the playoffs.
The Bombers got off to a quick start in Game 2, scoring 2 in the 1st and 1 in the 3nd for an early 3-0 lead. Joba faltered and gave it all back with the bases loaded in the 3rd. A-Rod also popped out the the bases loaded in the 2nd, missing a chance to blow the game wide open. But the 8th inning was a display of more clutch hitting as Matsui ripped a deep homerun, followed by another from Posada. The final was 7-5, but the 14 hits by the Yankees gave it a blowout feel. So that's 2 series wins against the Jays in a one week span.

Subway Tales: Gaylin the Shuffler
Gaylin rides the same train car as I do each day on the way home. He's probably an ordinary person like myself... casual day job, fixed daily routine. When I leave work at 5pm, I always see him in the front car. When the front car is packed, he sits in the one before and moves up just before the last stop. The peculiar thing about this guy is he's always listening to his iPod and keeps switching the music. He'll listen to one song and then in less than a minute, he's already shuffling through for the next. One would think that he'd have a train ride playlist put together already!
Notes:
- I switched up my evening rush train routine. So this is not the same one that I used to see Jorge on.
- I named this character "Gaylin" after a college friend that he resembles.

Long Sweep
Obviously I had a great weekend with the Yankees taking a 4-game series against the hated Red Sox. This really restored my confidence in the team. The Sox however still lead the season series 8-4. So the Yankees need to win the rest of the games to match them.Game 1 on Thursday was all offense. Joba gave up four runs, but the Yankees powered their way to a 13-6 victory. This got me worried because I had seen this before. They blow out the Red Sox in the first game of a series and then go into a slump for the rest. I was right about the offensive slump for Game 2, but it turned out to be a great pitchers duel with AJ vs. Beckett. There was no score until the 15th inning... over 5 hours into the game and way past midnight. That did a number to everyone's batting average, but the win is all that matters. A-Rod hit a 2-run (Jeter had a single) walk-off homer in the playoff-like game... instant classic. He hadn't homered in 71 at-bats to add to the drama.
It was the Red Sox who fell into a bad offensive drought as they fell in another shutout. The final score was 5-0... 2 shutouts in a row and no score since the 9th inning of Game 1. That's 24 innings with no runs! CC pitched 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, making up for his last start. The Sox broke their runs drought in the 8th inning of Game 4... 32 innings! But it was too late. The Yankees took that game 5-2 to complete the sweep. It was another great outing for Pettitte as he pitched shutout ball. He's been vintage the past few games and has actually performed better than CC! I like our chances with 3 aces in the rotation. I always think... what if we had last year's Chien Ming Wang in perfect health?

Tech Deals of the Week (8/9-8/15)
Flash Sales
- 8 GB SanDisk @ ST for $17.99
- 16 GB SanDisk @ ST for $39.99
- 8 GB Lexar @ OD for $17.99
- 16 GB Verbatim @ OD for $39.99
Logitech V220 @ BB for $17.99
This is one of the best non-laser optical mice you can get. The usual sale price is $20 (@ RS this week), so this is a bit lower if you feel like switching your laptop to a wireless pointing device.
Dynex Surge Protector/Lock Combo @ BB for $24.99
You get an 8-outlet surge protector and laptop lock for this great price. Usually, each of these is around $20-25, so you're pretty much getting one for free. It's a weird combo though because one doesn't usually associate surge protectors with laptop accessories. So the 2 items are unrelated.
100-pack DVD+R @ ST for $19.98
They have the 50-pack for $12.98, so the 100-pack is the best price per disc. DVD media sales are still pretty rare, so if you need them, this is a good price to stock up with.
CA 2.1 Speakers @ RS for $16.99
This is a great price for a basic 2.1 sound system if you don't have the right kind of space to setup a 5.1 or 7.1.
Icon Portable DVD Case @ RS for $19.99
It's pretty hard to find cases for the popular netbook class notebooks, which I find odd. But these portable DVD cases are great workarounds. This particular one should fit 9" netbooks just fine with additional space for the charger and accessories.
AA/AAA Battery Charger @ RS for $7.99
I've been featuring a lot of wireless devices lately, so I should promote battery chargers as well. This is nearly 50% off and should serve all of your AA and AAA-using devices.

Short Sweep
Last night, the Yankees wrapped up another sweep... just a short 2-game series against the Blue Jays. Tuesday's 5-3 win was a great game for Pettitte as he outpitched one of the league's best in Roy Halladay. For some odd reason, the Yankees were ripping homers off him as if he was an ordinary pitcher. Damon, Texiera and Matsui all went deep. Last night's game was won by offense. Mitre started and was consistently terrible. He's probably not far from getting sent down to the minors. Luckily the bats were there, led by Damon who went 3 for 5 with a HR. The team went 4 for 9 with RISP, something we haven't seen in their series loss to Chicago.
They start a 4-game series against the Red Sox tonight. This is the only series that counts. Many commentators are playing it down, saying that even if the Yankees split, they'll still come out in first place. I think they need to come out with more than that. They need to prove that the first half was a fluke and that they can convincingly beat this team. If they win the division, they could still face the Sox as a wildcard. One way or another, they will have to go through them.

Hero
The biggest news of the past few days was the release of US journalists (Who work for Al Gore at Current TV) Laura Ling and Euna Lee from a North Korean prison. They were arrested months ago for "hostile acts" and illegal border crossing. Bill Clinton headed out to North Korea on Monday to meet with Kim Jong Il. I thought that was a heroic move by the former president... possibly greater than anything he did as a President. It's just amazing how active this guy is in making the world a better place. It's a lot bigger than the 2 journalists too... this opens the door for more peaceful talks between us. Things were on their way downhill until now. So this was a great first step. A big thanks to Pres. Clinton for going out of his way to bring 2 Americans home. And to Kim Jong Il for listening to reason and taking a step in the right direction.

Dodged a Sweep
the Yankees looked as if they were going to get swept after CC didn't look dominant in his start. Luckily he settled down and the offense held things together behind Melky Cabrera's cycle. Despite the win, this was the first lost series since the All-Star break and the Yankees have yet to prove that they can consistently beat premium teams. Overall, they looked pretty bad in this series against Chicago. Game 1 on Thursday was probably the only game they should've won when Swisher hit a homer in the 9th to tie things up. It looked as if there was going to be another clutch performance, but the Sox were just more clutch, scoring a walk-off on Phil Coke. Friday's game was a big loss 10-5 and Saturday's was a blow out 14-4.
It's going to be a tough week as they have the Jays tonight, the Red Sox over the weekend and the Jays again right after that. Will this be a different Yankees team than the first half or will they just revert back to their losing ways? This week will certainly test that.

Office Lingo: High Level
One office term I've been hearing a lot lately really bothers me... "high level." It sounds like something super important. But the term doesn't refer to the importance of what's being described. It's actually the level of detail where "high" means the top of the pyramid. In other words, high-level actually means general information... little to no details. So with regards to importance, it's actually the opposite. A "high level" meeting is like an intro. or kickoff meeting that goes over general ideas... no details on implementation, staff, plan of execution, etc. It's just a bunch of business sponsors throwing out dumb ideas.

Sword of Azrael: Rodell Vereen
50 year old Rodell Vereen should be ostracized for raping Sugar... a horse! Owner, Barbara Kenley staked out her barn and caught the act on videotape. This has already happened the year before and Rodell pleaded guilty. When Kenley suspected it was happening again, she was told by cops that "it couldn't be the same guy." I thought that was weird. It's such a weird crime that Vereen should've been the prime and only suspect. So the Sword of Azrael falls on the cops as well. Lock up Vereen and fire the cops!
